"When you
photograph people in color you photograph their
clothes. When you photograph people in black and
white, you photograph their soul!"
- Ted Grant
The quote above struck
a chord when trying to find inspiration for this
president's message. It reminded me of the old
photographs my mom keeps stored in my grandpa's
old powder blue suitcase from the 60's.
The case contains a historical stash of my
papaw's life captured through film.
There is one photograph, however,
that no one in the family recognizes. It is a
picture of a young girl with a beautiful loving
smile looking shyly into the camera. On the back
of the photo, my grandpa wrote "the girl I'll
never forget." Her story was lost when grandpa
passed, but the soulful eyes of this black and
white captured so many years ago continues to
leave a lasting impression...

Playing
with Light and Dragging the Shutter
Michael
Santistevan will lead a hands-on lab about light
painting, dragging the shutter and creating
special effects by using a pixel
stick. Be
sure to bring your camera, a small flashlight
and a tripod.
Light
painting is
photography in the dark. By using a
long exposure and then using a flashlight
to paint in what you want the camera to see you
can create some unique photos. It can be done
for still life or even outdoor landscapes at
night. You can see examples and an article on the technique from
Shutterbug here.
Dragging
the shutter is another low light
technique using a long exposure with a flash to
freeze part of the action. Then you have a
photo with motion blur and your subject sharp.
You can see many examples at this
link.
Our May field trip will be held at the
Orlando Wetlands Park with our 4th Annual Oviedo
Photo Club Picnic incorporated. We will
have an assigned picnic area to serve as our
base camp for the day with plans for an early
lunch around 11. Bring your camera
equipment, lunch, and (if you like) a dessert to
share. The club will provide
bottled water. Birds and creatures are
active in the morning. You are welcome to
arrive at sunrise and stay past noon.
